My car was broken into tonight. Glass everywhere, possessions stolen, feeling violated. Some stuff of monetary value, other stuff valuable only to me. Like that great brush Mom gave me that would blow my hair out straight like no other brush could, that was in my gym bag.
Before getting too upset, I did what I often do to lift my spirits: look for quotes. (I know. I came to terms with my inner geek long ago.) I found two that were strikingly appropriate for me this week:
"Often we allow ourselves to be upset by small things we should despise and forget. We lose many irreplaceable hours brooding over grievances that, in a year's time, will be forgotten by us and by everybody. No, let us devote our life to worthwhile actions and feelings, to great thoughts, real affections and enduring undertakings."
-- Andre Maurois, French biographer, novelist and essayist, 1885-1967
"I'm very pleased with each advancing year. It stems back to when I was forty. I was a bit upset about reaching that milestone, but an older friend consoled me. 'Don't complain about growing old -- many, many people do not have that privilege.'"
-- Earl Warren, American politician and judge, 1891-1974
