My dearest darlings, (Yes, I read Sunday's Safire.)
I never quite understood the notion of a "guilty pleasure." If it gives you pleasure, there ain't nothin' to feel guilty about. That's why I'll tell you without a hint of shame that I love, love, love "Lipstick Jungle." For those of you who don't keep track of these things as semi-religiously as I do, L.J. is the new series from Sex and the City authoress Candace Bushnell. It stars Brooke Shields as a studio head who's trying to be successful as movie mogul and mommy, Kim Raver as a married magazine director having an adulterous affair with the hottest boy I've ever seen on television, and Lindsay Price as a fashion designer whose designs aren't quite haute, but whose love life is quite hot thanks to her billionaire boyfriend Joe Bennett, played by Andrew McCarthy. Yes, ladies, he's still rich and pretty after all these years.
The best way I've heard the show described was by Raver in a press interview: "These women aren't looking for Mr. Big. They are Mr. Big." Amen, sistah! Not only the jewelry sparkles, but the writing does too. I can't wait for each new episode to see what will happen and what they'll be wearing.
Unfortunately, I can't say the same for "Cashmere Mafia," the ABC show based on a similar premise and created by Darren Star, whose name you're also no doubt familiar with if you've watched every episode of "Sex and the City" a hundred times. (Remember: no guilt, ladies! Guys too, I suppose.) He was the show's exec producer and writer too, so there was tons of speculation about which show would be the bigger success, so to speak, Cashmere or Lipstick.
Well, my vote is in -- and it's for L.J. all the way! "Cashmere Mafia" is like the A.B.S. Allen Schwartz knock-offs of the Oscar gowns, whereas "Lipstick Jungle" is red carpet real.
So, ladies, read my lipstick: tune in to "Lipstick Jungle." Tomorrow night is the season finale already, but you can catch all the full episodes on nbc.com or Hulu. It'll make you feel good -- no guilt involved!
I thought I was the only one watching this show. And how much am I addicted to watching Victory and Joe jump around the planet?! Both Gossip Girl (did I just admit to that?) and LJ are my "guilty pleasures".
